Sammy Davis Jr was wearing an Australian army slouch hat given to him in Sydney, and as he entered the lift of a Melbourne hotel's palatial room, a passenger in the lift explained to him the reason for the raised brim on a soldier's hat's left side. Here in Melbourne for a series of concerts, the multi-talented entertainer - singer, dancer, actor and comedian, began his vaudeville career at the age of three with his dad, and commenced acting in movies in 1933. After completing his military service at conscription age of eighteen, he became an overnight sensation following a nightclub performance in Hollywood.
